(2020/11/05 updated)

Disignated learninig Institution(DLI)

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FROM LANGUAGES CANADA TO MEMBERS

Can international students planning to study for
less than 6 months
 come to Canada?
YES! But they need a study permit

Dear Languages Canada members,

As you know, as of October 20, designated learning institutions (DLIs) with a COVID-19
readiness plan approved by their province can once again welcome international students
who have a valid study permit or have been approved for a study permit.

What about students on TRVs or eTAs?
Currently, students CANNOT come to Canada on temporary resident visas (TRVs) or
electronic travel authorizations (eTAs). However, it is possible for short-term international students
pursuing a course of study of 6 months or less to apply for a study permit even though the eligibility questionnaire doesn't allow them to do so.

Asked how short-term students should apply for study permits, Immigration,
Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) provided the following guidance.

IRCC is aware that there is an issue in the [eligibility] questionnaire which does not
present applicants the option to apply for a study permit if they plan to study for less
than 6 months and do not require a temporary resident visa.
We are currently working to address this issue.

In the meantime, applicants from visa-exempt countries who wish to apply for
a study permit for a short-term program can indicate during the eligibility
questionnaire that they intend to stay in Canada for longer than 6 months.

This will generate their document checklist for a study permit application.

When they complete the application, the applicant should include their actual
dates of study which reflect that intend to study for less than 6 months.
